How to play

Sawayama Solitaire

You will need


Setup


Deal the cards face up into 7 columns, with the first column having 1 card, the second column having 2 cards, and so on, so that you are able to see the number of each card. This forms your tableau. Place the rest of the cards face down above the left-most column. This is your stock.

Play


Cards rank (from low to high): A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K

The objective is clear the tableau by moving cards to their suit's foundation consecutively, starting with the Ace. In the tableau, cards can be stacked in descending order provided that the top card of the stack and the card you wish to place it on do not share the same-coloured suit. Stacks may be split if desired.

Example: You can place a 7♦ (a stack of one) on an 8♠ or an 8♣, but cannot be placed on an 8♦ or an 8♥. The same applies to a stack of 7♦, 6♣, 5♥.

You may also deal 3 cards from the stock face up, and at any point play the top card from that pile. This is your burn pile. Any subsequent deal from the stock is placed on top of the burn pile. You are not allowed to replenish or refresh the stock; once cards have been dealt from the stock, they may only be moved to the tableau or the foundation.

Once a column is exhausted, you earn a free cell where you may play any single or stack of cards. Once the stock is exhausted, you earn a free cell where any single card may be placed. Cards from the burn pile may also be played to these free cells.

If you complete each foundation, you win. If you can no longer make a move, you lose.
